I think this has a contributes a great deal with society being as socially fucked up as it is.
Most people who say “You have to EARN my respect,” most likely don’t deserve yours AND…they’re assholes. I’ve found that the majority of idiots who say this are your below-standard,every-aspect-of-life-failures.
Is it really that hard to be respectful to others? Does it have a great deal to do with our comment thread anonymity? Or is just plain old fashioned apathy?
I don’t know.
Here’s a common example: People are most disrespectful while behind the wheel. I used to have a great deal of road rage and every now and then it seeps out. I generally try to be respectful to people while driving. The mantra I use is “How would I treat them if they were in the grocery line with me?”
This works pretty well. See, it’s that few feet difference and the metal and glass separation that makes most idiots think it’s acceptable to give people the finger, butt in front of them, yell or just invade some space. Next time you’re in traffic give this a try. It should calm you and save you some grief. If not, most likely, you’re an idiot.
Of course, don’t be afraid to call people out in the checkout line if they’re being the idiot. Especially if they’re slowing everyone down while on a cell phone. That I can’t fucking stand. Try it. It’s great.
So, when you’re out in public, try to be respectful to others. It’s just the right thing to do. We love to point out the idiocy of the world around us on this site. Every now and then we have to make sure you’re not leaning towards the idiotic.
This has been a public service announcement. Sorry.
