We usually don’t post on the same thing here at WFI but I couldn’t resist putting my two cents in on the Todd Akin thing.
I do my best to listen to both sides of each story. I do my best to form an opinion based on reason and facts. Sometimes it’s much more difficult than just basing my opinion on what a book says or a single person or leader believes.
This whole “Legitimate Rape” thing has got me going nuts. What sucks most is that I, like the Chief, are from Missouri and this whole thing reflects very poorly on us with the rest of the country. Holy shit does this reflect poorly.
I’ve heard a number of people defend Mr. Akin by stating that only 5% of rapes result in pregnancy. That’s not the point of Akin being lambasted. The point is that he spoke with authority that he understands that the female body has a way of rejecting rapists’ sperm from conceiving.
Is this the WTF statement of the year? Could be.
AND it’s from a man who is striving to be a leader and lawmaker. That’s the scariest part.
I’m glad this happened. This is the kind of exposure every person running for office needs. Every politician out there should be giving their opinion on subjects like this if this is what they truly believe. Let’s get them out in the open and have their constituents ask themselves, “Who the fuck am I voting for?”
Of course, there will always be those people who will defend them and back-peddle for them. Let’s scorn those idiots as well.
It boils down to this:
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, be prepared to be ridiculed if your opinion isn’t based on anything credible. And guess what, having faith that it’s true according to some religion isn’t good enough. Too many times have they been proven wrong. Especially when it comes to human and civil rights.
And in this case, women’s rights.
In closing, I don’t care if Todd Akin is a Republican or a Democrat. The fundamentalist idiots seem to be on the conservative side. As soon as a Democrat says something equally stupid (or even close) I’ll jump at the chance to rant about said idiocy.
Come on Claire McCaskill…What do you say?
